"Although this practice is presently only intended to offer relaxation, its ultimate purpose is to take you deep into the state where you are completely united with your inner being."
Swami Satyananda Saraswari
Yoga Nidra, from the Sanskrit word nidra meaning “sleep,” is a guided meditation and conscious relaxation practice designed to lead the practitioner into a profound state of deep rest.
Often referred to as yogic sleep, Yoga Nidra is an ancient technique in which awareness is gently drawn inward, moving from the external world to the inner landscape of consciousness. While the body rests deeply—hovering between wakefulness and sleep—the mind remains quietly aware. In this state of deep relaxation, the senses, intellect, and thinking mind are invited to release completely. Free from the usual concepts of time, space, and effort, the body enters a natural healing mode. Brain activity slows, the nervous system resets, and the body is able to restore itself at a cellular level, while the mind is refreshed and renewed. Though the body appears asleep, this is a state of heightened awareness and inner clarity.
All that is required is to listen and allow yourself permission to rest, balance, and restore.
It is traditionally said that one hour of Yoga Nidra can be as restorative as four hours of regular sleep.
Yoga Nidra may be practiced in group classes or through private one-to-one sessions, offered both in person and online.
iRest Yoga Nidra Mediation is a modern day adaption of the ancient practice of Yoga Nidra.
